Southampton FC have been relegated from the English Premier League (EPL) following a 3-1 loss to Tottenham at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The result sees the Saints, rock-bottom of the league, become the first team to be relegated from the EPL this season.

Southampton also made history as the team to suffer the earliest relegation in EPL history — after 31 matches and with seven games still to be played this season.

Brennan Johnson’s double and a late Mathys Tel penalty led Tottenham to the much-needed win that confirmed Southampton’s relegation, while Mateus Fernandes scored the visitors’ scant consolation as they prepare for life in the lower league.

The Saints are on 10 points after 31 matches, while Tottenham are in 14th place with 37 points from 31 matches.

Elsewhere, Alex Iwobi scored the second goal in Fulham’s 3-2 victory over Liverpool that ended the Reds’ 26-match unbeaten run.

Iwobi, Super Eagles midfielder, completed the turnaround for the Cottagers on 32 minutes with a deflected strike on the second attempt after Ryan Sessegnon had cancelled Alexis Mac Allister’s opener for the league leaders.

Liverpool maintain an 11-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal after 31 matches, while Fulham move up to eighth position on the EPL table.

It was however a dull affair in the last Manchester derby of the EPL season as United and City played out a goalless draw.

It was a similar scoreline for Chelsea at Brentford, with the Blues hanging on to their fourth spot ahead of City by one point.
