EPL: Iwobi’s brace leads Fulham to victory over Brighton

Alex Iwobi scored a brace to lead Fulham to a 3-1 victory over Brighton in their English Premier League (EPL) encounter on Thursday night.

The 28-year-old scored the opener and the third goal to ensure the hosts seal all three points against the visiting Seagulls.

Carlos Baleba had equalized for the visitors and Matt O’Riley’s own goal restored the lead for Fulham before Iwobi sealed the win with an excellent strike.

The midfielder’s first goal came in the fourth minute when he pounced on a loose back pass by Bart Verbruggen in the penalty area, allowing Iwobi slot the ball into an open goal for 1-0.

Carlos Baleba restored parity after the interval with a well-struck shot from the edge of the box that found the bottom corner.

O’Riley gifted Fulham the lead in fortuitous circumstances in the 87th minute when a corner kick delivery hit his back before ricocheting into the net.

Iwobi produced the best goal of the game three minutes before the end. The midfielder turned away from his marker before planting a curling shot into the far corner to wild jubilations.

Iwobi’s goals brings his season’s tally to five, and it is his fifth goal contribution – three goals and two assists – in his last four matches. He has either scored or provided an assist in the last four matches.

A key player in Marco Silva’s squad, the former Arsenal youngster has eight goal contributions this season, surpassing the tally of seven he managed throughout last season.

The victory moved Fulham up to sixth position on the EPL table with 22 points from 14 matches, one behind defeated Brighton in fifth place.
