EPL: Man City score last-gasp equaliser to deny 10-man Arsenal win in Etihad

John Stones celebrates last-gasp equaliser in Manchester City 2-2 draw against 10-man Arsenal

John Stones scored a last-gasp equaliser as ten-man Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in their English Premier League (EPL) clash on Sunday.

Leandro Trossard’s red card at the end of the first half saw the Gunners play the entire second half down by a man but Mikel Arteta’s men were denied victory in the final minutes of the encounter as Pep Guardiola’s usually sleek side avoided defeat at home.

Erling Haaland put Man City ahead in nine minutes when he converted Savinho’s through ball to score his 100th Man City goal in 105 appearances, equaling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the number of matches to reach the milestone.

The Norwegian striker has also reached double figures, becoming the first EPL player to reach ten goals in a season in five matches, breaking a record he equaled in 2022.

Injury to Rodri saw the Spaniard substituted and Arsenal took full advantage, Riccardo Calafiori, the summer signing letting fly into the net from 20 yards out for 1-1.

Gabriel completed the turnaround on 45 minutes with a header from a corner kick for 2-1. Trossard got his marching order after kicking the ball away to receive a second yellow card to exit the highly entertaining encounter.

The Gunners attempted to hold on for all three points but a scramble in the box in the final minute of added time saw John Stones’ effort find the back of the net to share the points.

The points shared mean Man City have not lost to Arsenal at home in ten matches, while the Gunners made it three matches without defeat against the seven-time EPL champions.

The draw also ended Man City’s perfect start to the season but the Cityzens regained top spot with 13 points from five matches, one more than Liverpool in second place. Arsenal are however fifth with ten points from as many matches.
