Manchester United defeated wasteful Newcastle United 3-2 in a thrilling English Premier League (EPL) encounter at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The enthralling match at a leaking Man United stadium certainly leaked goals too, with Kobbie Mainoo, Armad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund all on target for the Red Devils. Anthony Gordon and Lewis Hall were the scorers for Newcastle on the night they missed the chance to cement their participation in Europe next season.

Mainoo slotted in from 10 yards after being played onside by Kieran Tripper on 31 minutes but Gordon restored parity after the break.

The visitors had chances to take the lead against an underwhelming Man United but profligate finishing was their undoing, and Diallo punished them. The Ivoirian youngster scored his first EPL goal following a poorly cleared corner kick.

Hojlund sealed the win with a strike to the bottom corner, earning his 15th goal of the season. Hall’s late strike in added time was scant consolation for a rejuvenated Newcastle as Erik ten Hag’s side stopped the rot.

Despite the win, Man United remain in eighth position, behind Newcastle on goal difference as both vie for the last Europa Conference League slot next season.

Chelsea, on the other hand, took a major step towards a European return following a 2-1 win over Brighton despite going down to ten men late on following Reece James’ red card. Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku had scored in either half to seal the nervy win after Danny Welbeck had pulled one back deep in added time.

The Blues sit in sixth position with 60 points from 37 matches. Mauricio Pochettino’s men require only one point in their final game of the season to seal a place in Europe next season.
