Newcastle United scored twice in the second half to consign Manchester United to a 2-0 win at the St. James’ Park on Sunday.

The magpies put in a dominant display during the English Premier League (EPL) encounter and could have scored more if not for David De Gea, the Manchester United goalkeeper.

The home side were full of energy from the first whistle and could have done the job earlier but for wayward finishing from the likes of Joe Willock, Saint Alla-Maximin, Ean Longstaff and Fabian Schar.

De Gea also produced a double save as Man United managed to keep the scoreline level at the break.

While both sides had chances in the second half, Willock finally scored for Newcastle, with the Englishman nodding in from a yard out after being set up by Allan-Maximin’s header at the back post.

Eddie Howe’s men completed the job on 88 minutes when Wilson met Kieran Trippers free kick with a header that bounced into the bottom corner.

The victory is Newcastle’s first over Man United since 2019. It also avenged their Carling Cup final loss to the Red Devils in February.

The defeat all but ended Man United’s slim title challenge as the Old Trafford side dropped to fourth due to inferior goal difference to Newcastle, with both sides on 50 points from 27 matches.
