EPL results: Firmino’s late goal sends Liverpool clear of Tottenham at top

Liverpool climbed top of the English Premier League (EPL) table with a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Wednesday night, thanks to a late goal from Roberto Firmino.

In the clash of the table toppers, it was Liverpool who dominated and earned a victory that takes them three points clear of Jose Mourinho’s conservative London side.

The Portuguese coach has not won away against Liverpool in six attempts and Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager, is proving his Achilles heel for Mourinho’s away charm.

Liverpool took the lead on 26 minutes through Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian striker latched onto a loose ball and his shot was deflected off Toby Alderweireld before looping into the far corner for a 1-0 lead.

Totenham saw less than 30% of the ball in the entire match but equalized seven minutes later through Heung-min Son. The Korea Republic forward latched onto a through ball from Giovanni Lo Celso before slotting beyond Alisson Berker in Liverpool goal.

Tottenham had the better chances in the second half, with Steven Bergwijn hitting the post when through on goal and Harry Kane heading wide from point-blank range.

Liverpool continued to dominate but they were met by a resolute Spurs side that was determined to leave Anfield with a point but could not hang on till the end as Firmino had the final word. The Brazilian striker met a corner kick with a superb header that powered into the top corner.

The win for Liverpool — who are top of the EPL table with 28 points from 13 matches — means Jurgen Klopp’s champions are unbeaten in 66 Premier League home matches (W55-D11-L0) having not lost at Anfield since April 2017.

In the other match on the night, Arsenal made it six league matches without a win as they failed to overcome Southampton at the Emirates stadium. Mikel Arteta’s men finished the game with ten men after Gabriel, a defender, received his marching order after two bookable offences.

The Gunners languish in 15th position, three spots and five points above the relegation places after amassing only 14 points from 14 matches.
