EPL results: Liverpool secure 3rd straight defeat as Man City defeat Spurs

Leicester City earned a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Liverpool, English Premier League (EPL) champions, at the King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon, thanks to goals from James Maddison, Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes.

Despite Mohamed Salah opening the scoring, Liverpool succumbed to the Foxes’ 8-minute late rally as Brendan Rodgers’ side consigned Jurgen Klopp’s side to a third consecutive league defeat.

The underwhelming champions could have been punished in the first half but Vardy wasted glorious opportunities before Liverpool went ahead midway into the second half through Salah.

The 28-year-old Egyptian was on hand to dispatch a clever finish after latching on to Roberto Firmino’s brilliant pass.

Maddison equalised in the 78th minute with a brilliant free-kick while Vardy took the lead three minutes later through a gifted goal.

Jurgen Klopp’s disjointed side were punished following another horror show from Alisson Becker, the club’s Brazilian goalkeeper, who failed to clear a Leicester City long ball and Vardy was on hand to slot into an empty net for a 2-1 lead.

Barnes put the icing on a vital win when he finished off a pass from Wilfred Ndidi, Super Eagles’ midfielder, coolly slotting for a 3-1 win that sends Leicester City second on the EPL log.

Liverpool remain in fourth place with 40 points from 23 matches and could end the week outside the top four.

Man City open seven-point lead at the top

Manchester City opened up a seven-point lead over second-placed Leicester following a 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening.

Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan scored for the home side’s 16th consecutive win in all competitions, while also extending their unbeaten run to 23 matches.

Rodri scored from the penalty spot on 23 minutes following Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s foul on Gundogan.

The German international made it 2-0 five minutes after the restart when his late burst into the box was rewarded with a toe-poked shot that somehow found the back of the net despite Hugo Lloris’s best effort to keep it out.

Gundogan, a former Borussia Dortmund midfielder, scored his second — and City’s third — when he brushed off Davidson Sanchez before slotting into the bottom right corner with his left foot.

The Cityzens have amassed 53 points from 22 matches, one match less than Leicester who sit second on 46 points.
