Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by ten-man Chelsea in their English Premier League (EPL) encounter at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds toiled in the second after Reece James was sent off in the added time of the first half and Mohamed Salah cancelled Kai Havertz’s opener.

N’golo Kante returned for Chelsea and Romelu Lukaku led the line, while the trio of Fabinho, Andy Robertson, and Roberto Firmino also started for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side started out the better side and fashioned openings but it was Chelsea that took the lead on 21 minutes through Havertz.

The forward met Marcos Alonso’s near-post corner kick with a header that looped into the net beyond Alisson Becker’s dive for a 1-0 lead.

The Reds continued to seek a way back and finally did on the stroke of halftime. A goalmouth scramble from a Liverpool corner ended with James blocking the ball on the line with his arm. The wing-back was sent off following a VAR review and Salah expertly dispatched the resulting penalty kick to level the scoreline at halftime.

Thomas Tuchel introduced Thiago Silva and Mateo Kovacic at halftime as Liverpool went close through Henderson, Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk and Diogo Jota — but were all denied by Edouard Mendy in Chelsea’s goal.

In the first match of the day, Manchester City humiliated ten-man Arsenal in a 5-0 thrashing. Granit Xhaka was shown a red card on 35 minutes as City outplayed a rudderless Arsenal side.
