EPL round-up: Iwobi, Bassey help Fulham defeat Man United as Arsenal beat Newcastle

Arsenal scored twice in each half to thrash Newcastle United 4-1 in their English Premier League (EPL) encounter at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The late kick-off saw Arsenal stroll to an easy win courtesy of an own goal and further goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiwior. Joe Willock scored the visitors’ consolation goal.

Arsenal took the lead on 18 minutes when Sven Botman bundled a rebound over the line after Loris Karius had saved Gabriel’s header from a corner kick. Havertz subsequently tapped in from Gabriel Martinelli’s low cross to give the Gunners a 2-0 lead at the interval.

The hosts scored two goals in four minutes to seal the win, with Saka brilliantly finding the bottom corner for the third on 65 minutes, before Kiwior rose highest to convert Declan Rice’s cross for Arsenal’s 19th goal from a set-piece this season — the highest in the EPL.

Late in the match, a looping header from Willock, a former Arsenal player, gave Newcastle something to take back to St. James’ Park as they suffered a first away loss in three matches.

Mikel Arteta’s title-chasing side stay third on the EPL log with 58 points, one behind second-placed Manchester City and a further point away from Liverpool, the league leaders.

Earlier in the day, Alex Iwobi scored in added time to hand Fulham a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Calvin Bassey, his Super Eagles teammate, had put Fulham in the lead midway into the second half. Although Harry Maguire’s leveller looked to have secured a point for the Red Devils, Iwobi delivered late drama to stun the home crowd, ending Man United’s four-game winning streak and five-match unbeaten run.
