EPL round-up: Southampton end Arsenal’s winning streak as Newcastle defeat Spurs

Arsenal stumbled against Southampton to register a disappointing 1-1 draw in their English Premier League (EPL) encounter at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday.

The Gunners saw their impressive canter at the summit of the EPL suffer a setback after the Saints stopped their winning streak in the league.

Since a loss at Old Trafford in early September, Mikel Arteta and his exciting band of players have won four league games on a bounce.

Arsenal started the game the better side and deservedly took the lead in the 11th minute after a precise cross from an adventurous Ben White found Granit Xhaka in the middle of Southampton’s goal area. The Swiss’ right-footed half volley was too quick for Gavin Bazunu to react as it fizzed into the net.

The hosts endured pressure from the visitors and reaped the reward with a riposte in the second half. Mohamed Elyounoussi scuttled in from the right, before slipping a pass to Stuart Armstrong, who finished low beyond the stretched legs of Aaron Ramsdale.

The draw shrinks Arsenal’s lead at the top of the league to two points ahead of Manchester City.

Later in the day, Harry Kane’s goal was not enough to save Tottenham from their third league defeat in five games.

The English forward’s strike was dwarfed by goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron which sneaks Newcastle into the top four.
