Semi-automated offside technology in use
The English Premier League (EPL) says semi-automated offside technology will be used in matches starting on April 12.
The league announced the decision in a statement on its website on Tuesday.
EPL said the technology will be used from matchday 32, adding that some “non-live testing” had been done earlier in the season.
“The Premier League has worked in collaboration with PGMOL and sports data and technology company Genius Sports to develop a new semi-automated offside technology system – and this will be its first use in a live competition,” the statement reads.

The semi-automated technology uses a virtual offside line based on optical player tracking, and produces animation graphics of the decision.
In April 2024, EPL announced that the semi-automated offside technology would be introduced into the league.
The league did not give a specific date for adoption for the technology but stated that it would be after the autumn international breaks of the 2024/25 season.

The decision was made after a unanimous agreement by all the clubs at a Premier League Shareholders’ meeting.
The first usage of the semi-automated offside technology in top-level football was at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The technology has also been used in the UEFA Champions League (UCL), La Liga, and Serie A.
