Ese Brume qualifies for long jump final at World Athletics Championships

Ese Brume has qualified for the women’s long jump final at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

The 27-year-old Nigerian leapt a distance of 6.72 metres to progress as one of the best performers in Group A.

The qualification round took place on Saturday at the Nemzeti Atlétikai Központ, Budapest, Hungary.

The Nigerian failed to achieve the 6.8 meters mark needed for automatic qualification but earned her finalist status as one of the closest jumpers.

The qualification earned Brume her third consecutive spot in the women’s long jump final at the championships.

She won bronze in the 2019 edition in Doha, Qatar and earned a silver medal in Oregon, US in 2022.

Brume, one of Nigeria’s brightest hopes for a medal in Budapest, is billed to line up for the long jump final on Sunday at 4pm.

Ruth Usoro, her compatriot, failed to progress after finishing eighth with a jump of 6.6 metres.

In the 4×400 mixed relay, the Nigerian quartet of Dubem Nwachukwu, Patience Okon-George, Nathaniel Ezekiel and Nse Imaobong ran their season best of 3:14.38m but only finished seventh in the heat.

In men’s shot put, Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi finished 13th overall with a throw of 20.68 meters and failed to qualify for the event’s final.
