Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos commissioner for information and strategy, says the state government was not involved in the demolition of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) complex located at the computer village in Ikeja, Lagos.
Omotoso spoke on Sunday in a post on his official X handle.
Witnesses had told TheCable that the complex, housing 300 shops with over 1,000 traders, was demolished by four bulldozers manned by armed police officers on Sunday morning.
“Lagos State Government has nothing to do with the demolition at Computer Village in Ikeja. The structure is owned by the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), which ordered its demolition,” the commissioner said.

He said those conveying the news of the Lagos government behind the demolition are “ethnic dividers”.
“Those circulating the fake news that the Lagos State Government is demolishing Computer Village are opportunistic ethnic chauvinists who will always relish in vacuous propaganda that can fuel their fiendish mission; they will always fail in dividing Lagosians.”
Before Omotoso’s post, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police public relations officer (PPRO), had said in a post on Saturday night that the demolition was to enable the commencement of construction of a modern shopping complex on the same plot.

Adejobi said the decision to reconstruct the complex was based on the advice of experts which revealed that the structure constitutes a looming environmental hazard.
