Euro 2024: German police shoot man ‘armed with axe’ near fanzone

The Hamburg police department says its operatives have shot a man allegedly with an axe and “an incendiary device” near a fanzone at the ongoing 2024 UEFA European Championship.

In a tweet on the department’s X account, the police said the man “threatened” a couple of its operatives with the weapons.

The incident happened in the St. Pauli area of Hamburg, which was teeming with fans before Sunday’s Group D clash between the Netherlands and Poland.

The man was injured by the gunshot and was rushed to the hospital, where he currently receives treatment.

“At St Pauli, there is currently a major police operation. According to initial findings, a person threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device. The police then used their firearms. The attacker was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment,” the tweet reads.

The police have yet to provide the man’s identity and the motive for his actions.

There are reportedly 30,000 Dutch fans in the city and probably a similar number of Polish supporters. The game between the two nations ended 2-1 in favour of the Netherlands.
