Euro roundup: Man City, Liverpool, Juve, PSG remain unbeaten

The major leagues in Europe resumed after the international break with Manchester City and Liverpool setting the pace in England while PSG and Juventus also remain unbeaten.

Man City steamrolled West Ham 4-0 thanks to a Leroy Sane brace and further goals from David Silva and Raheem Sterling while Liverpool stayed close to City with a 3-0 win at Watford, courtesy of goals from Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino despite a red card to captain, Jordan Henderson.

Chelsea suffered their first league defeat of the season in the London derby against Tottenham, losing 1-3 at Wembley. Tottenham scored twice in less than 20 minutes through Dele Ali’s glancing header and Harry Kane’s long-range strike. South Korea’s Heung-Min Son’s solo effort made it three on 54 minutes, outpacing both Jorginho and an erratic David Luiz before coolly slotting into the goal.

In other games, Mourinho’s Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace who earned their first point against United at Old Trafford since 1989.

In Spain, Real Madrid were roundly beaten 0-3 by Eibar. Santiago Solari, in his first game since being given the Real Madrid job on a full-time basis, had no answer to an impressive Eibar performance which saw Real drop to sixth on the table, six points off the top and five behind Barcelona. The Catalans needed a last-minute goal from Ousmane Dembele to earn a 1-1 draw at Atlético Madrid, cancelling out Diego Costa’s 77th minute strike.

In Italy, Juventus, with a 2-0 win over SPAL, extended their lead at the top of Serie A to eight points ahead of second-placed Napoli who were held 0-0 by Chievo. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for Juventus on 29 minutes while Mario Mandzukic doubled the lead on 60 minutes.

PSG defeated Toulouse 1-0 to make it 14 straight league wins in the French Ligue 1. In the absence of both Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappe, Edison Cavani scored the only goal of the game.

Monaco finally won a league match for the first time since August, defeating Caen 1-0 at home. New manager, Thierry Henry, at his seventh attempt, was handed his first victory through Radamael Falcao. The former Atlético Madrid striker scored with a well-taken free kick to give some respite to the relegation-threatened side.
