Patrice Evra, former Manchester United defender, has revealed that he received death threats from “Liverpool fans in prison” following the Luis Suarez racism incident.

In 2011, Evra was racially abused by the then Liverpool star during a match in Anfield between the two arch-rivals, with the Uruguayan striker found guilty of misconduct by the English Football Association.

Suarez, who currently plays for Barcelona, was suspended for 8 games and fined £40,000 — a decision that seemingly did not go down well with some prisoners who, according to the former French player, claimed were Liverpool fans.

During Monday’s episode of Man United podcast, Evra said: “Manchester United received so many threatening letters about me.

“People said: ‘We’re in jail, we’re Liverpool fans. When we get out, we’re going to kill you and your family’.

“For two months, I had security everywhere I went. They were sleeping in front of my house. Everywhere I went, the security followed me.

“It was a tough time, but I wasn’t scared. My family were scared: my wife and brother, but I wasn’t. I couldn’t understand why people hated me so much. They didn’t know the truth.”

Evra went on to earn legendary status at Old Trafford, winning one Champions League title, five Premier League titles and the League Cup on three occasions.
