Students killed in Kano explosion

Eight persons, mostly students, have been confirmed killed in an explosion that hit the School of Hygiene, Kano, on Monday.

The blast occurred at about 2.05pm when students were rushing to the school to collect their admission letters for higher national diploma programme scheduled to commence soon.

The suicide bomber came with a rucksack on his back, pretending to be one of the students, according to the state commissioner of police,  Alhaji Adenrele Tasheed Shinaba, who addressed the press.

Emergency services have been deployed in the area, with security agencies cordoning off the entire area.

Ambulances were seen moving inside the school — which is adjacent to the private resident of the inspector-general of police, Mr. Muhammad Abubakar — and carrying dead bodies and injured persons to various hospitals.

Shinaba confirmed the eight deaths as well as injury to 12 people.

“There was an explosion in the school this afternoon and it happened right inside the school premises; that is why we had to move in,” he said, according to NAN.

“I want to confirm to you that 20 people were moved to the hospital, but eight were confirmed dead and 12 others injured’.”

He also said one suspect (pictured) had been arrested and was undergoing interrogation at the police headquarters.

The commissioner said the vehicle used by the suspect had also been towed to the police headquarters.

“The suspect is in our custody and we will get to know the motive behind the attack and who sent him on this deadly errand,” he said.
