Police have arrested some supporters of Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly.

On Monday, Obasa was removed as the speaker of the house over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The 52-year-old lawmaker, who represents Agege state constituency I, became speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly in 2015. He was serving his third term as speaker.

Mojisola Meranda, the deputy speaker, was subsequently elected to lead the house.

Following Obasa’s impeachment, a group of men reportedly loitering around the premises of the house of assembly complex were arrested by the police.

In a viral video, the men, locked in a police van, claimed they came down to the assembly to visit Obasa when they were arrested.

One of the detained men who spoke to journalists through the window shutters of the van claimed they were members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Agege constituency.

“A tangible reason has not been given for apprehending us here. We are like 20 here and we are from Orile Agege. We are APC youths,” one of the men said.

Some of them begged passersby to get them food and water.
