In a clear departure from conventional sanctions, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), via its official X handle, has cursed those who vandalised transformers.
In a post published on Wednesday, BEDC also cursed customers who bypass their pre-paid meters.
“E no go beta for who dey vandalize transformer and who dey bypass,” BEDC wrote.
E no go beta for who dey vandalize transformer and who dey bypass.

Vandalism of transformers and other electricity infrastructure and bypassing of pre-paid meters are some of the challenges facing electricity distribution companies (DisCos) across the country.
DisCos across the country report on an almost daily basis the activities of vandals on transformers and other power installations.

In April 2024, a middle-aged man was electrocuted while attempting to vandalise the BEDC’s transformer along airport road in Benin, Edo state capital.
In February 2025, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) said no fewer than 6,000 transformers were vandalised across Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina states during a four-day nationwide blackout.
Bypassing of meters is another problem facing DisCos.
Recently, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) announced new penalties for individuals and businesses found guilty of tampering with or bypassing electricity meters
