Mark Robinson, executive director of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), has described Mele Kyari as a reform champion.
EITI is the global standard to promote the open and accountable management of oil, gas and mineral resources.
In June, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Kyari as the group managing director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Speaking at a meeting in Abuja with civil society organisations and journalists, Robinson said he was impressed by the GMD’s humility.

In a series of tweets, Oke Epia, publisher of OrderPaper, said Robinson’s response was short and picturesque when asked about his first impression of Kyari when they met.
According to him, Robinson described how the NNPC chief got off his seat and served him tea.
“My answer to your question would be to tell you a story about my first impression of the GMD,” the EITI chief said.

“He could have asked his staff to serve me tea but that he got off his seat, made the tea and served me himself says a lot about the man at the helms of affairs at the NNPC.
“There’s no better way of knowing a reform champion and am happy that the EITI has found in Mr. Kyari one who’d advance the cause of transparency in Nigeria’s extractive industry.”
