Damian Chukwu, Borno state police commissioner, says 379 cows, 179 goats and sheep in the custody of the command may be auctioned.
The livestock was recovered by the Nigeria army from Boko Haram suspects and handed over to the command on the April 7.
Speaking at the news conference on Thursday, Chukwu said his command might be forced to approach a court for permission to carry out a public auction of the animals.
He said the command could not afford feeding the animals indefinitely.

The police commissioner also paraded three suspected members of a robbery gang who attempted to rob a man of his tricycle.
Chukwu said the command arrested three suspected fraudsters who sell ground sawdust as pepper and flour to the public.
He said they were arrested by undercover agents, and that they would appear in court soon.

Chukwu also disclosed that one Modu Bulama Mustapha, a wood seller, was arrested for allegedly being a fuel supplier to Boko Haram.
According to him, Mustapha has confessed to the crime.
He said the suspect confessed that he was threatened by Boko Haram to be their fuel purveyor.
Chukwu added that all the suspects would be prosecuted.
