Mahmood Muhammed fought back tears before weeping profusely, after he was dismissed from the police force by the Adamawa state command.

In a clip making the rounds on the internet, Muhammed could be seen crying as his police cap, belt and shirt were yanked off him one after the other by a superior.

On Wednesday, the Adamawa police command announced the dismissal of two officers over alleged homicide, defamation of character and unlawful exercise of authority.

Suleiman Nguroje, spokesperson of the command, identified the officers as Ahmed Suleiman and Mahmood Muhammed.

Nguroje said the dismissed officers were formally attached to Dumne divisional police headquarters in the state.

“On the 30/8/2023 Adamawa State Police Command tried Insp Ahmed Suleiman and PC Mahmood Muhammed, formally attached to Dumne Divisional Police Headquarters, in an orderly room trial,” the statement reads.

“The men were tried on three count charges, discreditable conduct to wit: defamation of character, culpable homicide and unlawful exercise of authority contrary to paragraph ‘E'(I)(iii) & ‘Q'(I)(iii) of first schedule of Police Act and Regulations, section 370, 2020 as amended.

“The command found them guilty as charged and recommended the punishment of dismissal for both defaulters. They will be charged to court alongside other co-suspects.

“The constable has been de-kit while the inspector will be de-kit after fulfilling some administrative procedures.”

The spokesperson added that Afolabi Babatola, commissioner of police in the state, has warned officers of the command to be punctual and shun acts of indiscipline at all times.

In a related development, Kayode Egbetokun, the acting inspector-general of police, has warned officers against extortion and harassment of commuters on highways.

Egbetokun said the force has noted the series of complaints on the unprofessional conduct of police officers as raised by the national assembly.

He added that any officer found guilty of misconduct will face severe disciplinary measures.
