Ezekwesili: Chibok girls won’t be in captivity for 828 days if they were daughters of politicians

Oby Ezekwesili, leader of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) group, has criticised Christopher Christie, governor of New Jersey, US, for playing politics with the Chibok girls’ abduction.

On Tuesday during the Republican National Convention, Christie had blamed Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee, for the abduction of over 200 girls from Chibok Government College, Borno state.

The governor also inferred that the #BringBackOurGirls campaign was sponsored by Clinton and the Barack Obama administration.

Reacting to Christie’s comments, the former minister of education warned him to leave the missing girls out of his politics.

In defence of of Clinton, Ezekwesili said the former US secretary has a “record of helping empower women”.

In a series of tweets posted on Wednesday, she also addressed the continued captivity of the Chibok girls, whom she said would have been rescued if they were children of Nigeria’s “political elite”.

“If our Chibok girls were daughters of our political elite, they would not be languishing in terrorist captivity for 828 days”, Ezekwesili tweeted.

“Human dignity of our Chibok girls ought not to be a function of their being from poor homes. They deserve the justice of rescue.”

The rest of the world cannot accord a people a higher level of respect and dignity than their own government gives them.”
