FAKE NEWS ALERT: Igbo passengers not burnt to death in Kano, say police

The Kano police command has dismissed a viral social media post alleging that an 18-seater bus carrying passengers from Kano to the south-east was ambushed and set ablaze in the northern state by a violent mob.

According to the post which circulated over the weekend, the attack left no survivors.

The post included three images of a burnt vehicle.

A reverse image search showed that the images first surfaced online in September 2023.

The image was used to report an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway involving a bus that caught fire. All 18 passengers escaped unhurt.

The image resurfaced in a January report this year when 19 wedding guests lost their lives in a road accident in the Kwana Macji Area of Pankshin LGA in Plateau.

The victims were returning to Kano after attending a wedding in Barkin Ladi.

Speaking to TheCable on Monday, Abdullahi Kiyawa, state police spokesperson, dismissed any recent attacks in the state on Igbos.

“We did not have any issue like that in Kano, it is fake news,” he said.

In a separate statement, Kiyawa said the police have commenced an investigation into the source of the false information and will take necessary actions to bring those responsible to justice.

The reports come days after a mob in the Uromi area of Edo state attacked and killed at least 16 hunters of northern descent who were travelling from Elele, Rivers.

Monday Okpebholo, governor of Edo, charged the police and community leaders to work together in nabbing the culprits.
