FAKE NEWS ALERT: People in viral picture with Obi Cubana NOT our staff, says EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says its officials did not take pictures with Obi Cubana, the Abuja-based business mogul, after his release from their custody.

The 46-year-old businessman, who was grilled for alleged money laundering and tax fraud, was released on Thursday evening by the anti-graft agency.

On Friday, a picture of the businessman and some people, who were alleged to be EFCC officials. began to circulate on social media, claiming the photo was taken after Cubana was released.

In a statement, Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC’s spokesman, said the people in the picture are not known to the commission and the image was not taken at its facility.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, wishes to disclaim a trending photograph in the social media purported to have been taken by socialite Obi Cubana in the premises of the Commission, crowded by people described as staff of the EFCC,” Uwujaren said.

“The said picture captioned: EFCC Crew poses for quick photograph with billionaire socialite and businessman, Obi Cubana, was not taken in EFCC facility and the people therein are unknown to the Commission.

“The Commission warns the public not to be misled by another mischievous stunt by Cubana’s publicists.”

Checks by theCable showed that the picture was shared by Cubana on his Instagram page on October 7 after a book launch at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja before his encounter with the EFCC.
