Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, Falconets, earned a ticket to the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a 1-0 win against South Africa in Johannesburg on Sunday.
Falconets thus qualified for the tournament 3-1 on aggregate and will be one of Africa’s two flag bearers at next year’s championship in Papua New Guinea.
Nigeria dominated the early exchanges and it was no surprise when striker Chinwendu Ihezuo scored from a pull-out from defender Mary Ologbosere in the 16th minute.
South Africa continued to fight, but the Falconets held on to the victory.

After the game, coach Peter Dedevbo said he was impressed with his team.
“Our ability on the African continent has never been in doubt. We had a game plan and stuck to it till the end,” he said.
“Our objective now should be to start preparing towards winning the World Cup next year.”
