Uchenna Kanu, Super Falcons winger, says she used to hawk oranges and sachets of water across the markets in Aba city to make ends meet while she was younger.

The Racing Louisville player spoke in a video on her Tiktok account. The short clip, wherein she was skillfully peeling an orange, was accompanied by the caption: “I’ve really come a very long way, but God is the greatest!”

Kanu, who grew up in the Aba area of Abia state, narrated how she used to hawk around the city with her brothers.

She said her siblings also sold cold carbonated drinks in markets, and “we would just see each other, and then we would say, ‘Hey!’ We would laugh and then separate again”.

“I used to sell oranges when I was younger. I would peel the oranges and put them in a pan, put it on top of my head and walk around the streets of Aba, hawking them,” the 26-year-old said.

“And also, I hawked water. For Nigerians who would watch this video, I sold pure water and ice water. Also, I would go with my brother; he would hawk soda; that’s Coca-Cola, Fanta, and Pepsi. Sometimes, we would be hawking in the market, and we would just see each other, and then we would say, ‘Hey!’ We would laugh and then separate again.”

Kanu played for the Nigerian women’s U-17 team, known as the Flamingos, in the age-grade World Cup in 2014. She was also selected for the U-20 Women’s World Cup later that year.
