The family of Nowamagbe Omoigui, foremost military historian, has launched the Nowa Centre for Advancement of Art, History and Medicine in memory of the renowned scholar.
The centre, which was launched on Friday, will be operated by DAGOMO Foundation with support from the family, well-wishers and donors.
Titilola Park, chief programme officer of DAGOMO foundation, said it was established to promote Omoigui’s study and works of art.
“Dr Nowa made history available to all, this will be a catalyst to encourage people to follow in his part. His immense achievements are recognised internationally and locally,” she said.

“The Nowa centre will archive the chronological military history and Edo people. Seminar and lectures will form key tools in the dissemination of the message.
“The centre would curate rare historical materials and publications inclusive of historical artefacts and archaeological findings of significance.”
Park added that the centre which will be sited in Benin, Edo state capital and the hometown of Omoigui, will run a virtual space where the foremost historian’s works will be curated.

It will also run a museum for the purposes of cultural research and civic education, and will oversee an annual memorial lecture every April 18 to commemorate his death.
“The centre will also encourage and solicit the donation of books, articles, artefacts, art, mementoes and other items of ancient and contemporary significance by individuals and families with due recognition accorded,” she said.
Omoigui died on April 18 at the age of 62. He was a cardiologist in Columbia, United States.
Daniel Omoigui, his father, was a former surveyor-general of the federation, while Ifueko Omoigui Okauru, his sister, was a former chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
