Farmers-herders crisis: NSCDC to set up agro-rangers base in Abuja community

The federal capital territory (FCT) command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it will set up an operational base for agro-rangers in Kuje to address the security challenges in the area council.

The agro-rangers unit of the corps was set up to settle disputes between farmers and herders, and secure agro-allied investments in the country.

Olusola Odumosu, the FCT NSCDC commandant, spoke on Tuesday during a surveillance of the Dafara community under the area council.

Odumosu, who was represented by Okon Offiong, deputy commandant, said the aim of establishing the base is to tackle the rate of kidnapping and farmers-herders clashes.

“Our priority is to ensure adequate security of farmers, all agricultural investments, and to promote peaceful co-existence between farmers and herders through alternative dispute resolution,” the commandant said.

“The command has trained men who are well equipped in carrying out the task, and we will ensure that the people of Dafara go about their farming business without any fear of attack from any quarter.”

He said the measure would reduce the tension between farmers and herders and guarantee increased agricultural activities in the area.

Peter Shekarau, the chief of Dafara, thanked the NSCDC for the commitment to deploy personnel to the community.

Shekarau said the intervention is timely given the security challenges in the area and other parts of the country.

The chief assured that the community is willing to provide an enabling environment for the personnel to operate.
