Since the advent of Nigeria’s fourth republic in 1999, the lower chamber of the national assembly has always courted huge media attention, not just for performing its assigned legislative functions but also for the numerous remarkable (positive and negative) events that happened at plenary.
As its curtain closes and another chapter opens on Tuesday with the inauguration of a new assembly, TheCable reviews 11 of those magical moments of the 7th federal house of representatives.
TAMBUWAL EMERGES SPEAKER
Aminu Tambuwal could have been in the house since 2003, but he belonged to the relatively unpopular class until the lawmakers elected him against the wish of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), then the ruling party. The party had zoned the fourth most important office in the country to the southwest, and Mulikat Akande Adeola was its candidate to succeed Dimeji Bankole, who lost his re-election bid. With the support of lawmakers of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Tambuwal won against the wish of his own party.
