TAMBUWAL’S STRATEGIC DEFECTION
For the first time since 1999, the speaker of the house defected to an opposition party. After announcing his defection on October 28, 2014, Aminu Tambuwal, now the governor of Sokoto state, adjourned plenary to December 3 – a move that was perceived as an attempt to prevent his removal from office.
His security aides were withdrawn and the leadership of the PDP demanded that he should vacate his seat. It turned out an interesting saop opera that ended in Tambuwal’s way. First, impeachment plans against him failed. Then his friends and associates purchased the presidential nomination form for him. And, yes, he woke up one day to say, ‘Look, I don’t even want to be president; get me the Sokoto state governorship nomination form’. And today, he is exactly the governor he wanted to become!
