Fashola: I have no child outside wedlock

Babatunde Fashola, former governor of Lagos state, has denied several allegations levelled against him since he left office, comparing his accusers with pigs who get “happy” when they get you “dirty”.

With strong rumours that he may be appointed minister by President Muhammadu Buhari, Fashola has come under scrutiny in recent times, including allegations that he fathered a set of twins outside marriage, left Lagos state in huge debts and awarded a N78 million contract to upgrade a website registered in his name.

In a statement issued on Thursday night, Fashola denied all the rumours, quoting a proverb: “When you wrestle with a pig, the pig gets happy and you get dirty.”

On the issue of extra marital paternity, he said he only adopted three children who were orphaned by the Dana crash of 2012, adding that he went through due process.

He denied any involvement in the national assembly leadership elections, and said all the loans he took as Lagos governor went through due process and they are being repaid.

Fashola pointed out that he also met debts when he became governor in 2007 after the eight-year tenure of Bola Tinubu.

This statement of profound wisdom informed my silence in the wake of manipulated and unsubstantiated allegations of wrongdoing recently being levelled against me. They started a few weeks to the end of my tenure, and have continued till date.

They range from allegations of extra marital paternity of children, to mundane and phantom conspiracy in the National Assembly, a debt profile for Lagos State and lately a website upgrade contract of N78 million, which is being distorted.

In so far as the allegations of paternity are concerned, they are wicked and false. I have no biological children other than my two children.

Of course, I adopted three children who became orphaned as a result of the tragic DANA Airplane crash of 2012 and the adoption followed due process. Those who do not care whether they hurt innocent children or invade the privacy of other citizens in their mindless rage against me will have their rewards served upon them in the fullness of time.

As far as my alleged involvement in the National Assembly elections are concerned, they remain only the products of the imagination of those who made the allegations. I was out of the country at the material time and returned only in the early hours of that morning to Abuja, and from there proceeded to Lagos.

As far as debts of Lagos State are concerned, the fact is that Lagos had always had debts. Her population is growing and for a long time she has run deficit budgets to cater to the needs of that growing population.

All the debts contracted in my time were approved by the Parliament in the annual budgets, some have been paid back and the financial status was healthy and stable when I left. The outlook for the state and her rating by Fitch was long-term foreign and local currency IDRs at ‘BB-‘, short-term IDR at ‘B’ and national long-term rating at ‘AA+(nga)’.

When we all pause to reflect and think ,we will realise that there are a sizable number of companies who are running business, who have no responsibility for Security, Public Health, Public Education and other responsibilities of Government, who borrow more than Lagos State Government, whether collectively or individually.

As far as the website contract is concerned, yes there was a contract. It went through procurement and was approved by the Government agency authorised to do so.

One of the services was an “upgrade” quoted for N12.5 million but awarded for N12 million. There were other services that were new; like a handover countdown clock, mobile Apps for Google, for IOS and ipad, for Microsoft, and for Research in Motion (Blackberry), which the existing website did not have, as well as the annual maintenance cost for managing the website.

It was for all these services that the contract was issued for N78 million, which the Lagos State procurement agency gave a No Objection based on the advice of the Ministry of Science and Technology, who are the Government adviser on ICT matters.

In publishing this Contract award which was the Government tradition under my watch, the procurement agency’s website summarised it as “upgrade” only without detailing the other services and this has been distorted by the agents of hate as their suspected “smoking gun”.

For those who are familiar with mobile Applications, they will know that users either pay for them online or download them for free.

What is usual is that applications for service are usually provided to users free, but somebody bears the cost.

Since these applications were to be made available to the public for free access and to assist Government communication, we decided to pay for them.

The entire documents are with the Lagos State Government and are available for those who seek the truth. For the record, since 2008, long before the Freedom of Information Act was ever passed, we had put out  all our contracts  on the State website because I believe people deserve to know.

It is regrettable that a “summary” of the contract has been deliberately distorted to misinform the public.

This particular website came into being as a result of the decision I made to make my telephone number public for the several thousands of people seeking to reach me daily.

The website that is now under attack helped me to do my job and to respond to citizens, and the contract was issued to run till my last day of office. It stands logic upside down for to “fraudulently” award a contract and then have it published on a website.

To date, there have been 27.666 million hits on this website, with 1,844 videos, 34,381 photographs, 2,531 Press Releases and 595 Speeches, among other items of public communication.

I have chosen to make this personal response because as the head of government at the time of the transaction, the buck as they say stops on my desk and also because of the many calls, text messages and mails coming from many people seeking clarification and to prevent fiction from being mistaken for truth.

I expect that there may be more distorted allegations without evidence, for reasons that remain in the realm of speculation, because, I have been informed reliably that large amounts of money are being paid to some of these agents to bear false witness.

I cannot conclude without responding to the crusade of CACOL and their ilk, seeking my prosecution on allegations that have no proof and writing “pre-emptive” letters to the Presidency.

In case they are unaware, I am not looking for a job. I expect them to know that allegations of wrong doing are not resolved without evidence, neither are they resolved in press conferences.

I have served my state, and by extension, my country for Twelve and half years and I did so with my heart.

I am taking the rest that I believe I have earned.

For those who still wish to remain in the mud, they should look in the mirror.

For those who wish to throw mud at me, they should look at their own hands.

As for me, I have moved on. My job is done.

  1. Oga fashola,
Pls help us tell dem. Your reply is extremely succint and straight to d point. Let the jobless, evil and naysayers who will never do something good nor let someone else do it go and chew on their own envy, bile and vomit. Pls enjoy the resting period, knowing that you will receive another call to serve your fatherland. I pray you answer it.

  2. It’s now that all of you (APC) are moving on – as this media bashing has gotten to one of your own – but when it was GEJ he cant move on right? You said you hv served nigeria for 12yrs and needs rest, GEJ that has served 16yrs at the most intense level nko, he doesnt need abi? All APC members from A-Z are all hypocrite. For them its one nation two rules. Gosh!!!

      1. You cant do anything to help those who want to move on. Just like Fashola said, pigs will enjoy wrestling with you just to get you dirty. So you just have to move on and let the pigs wrestle with imaginary enemies and manufacture enemies. They get their groove from maligning others.

  3. Look here Fashola! just maybe you did not know. All APC members are pigs. If you doubt it, ask OBJ and Wole Soyinka.

    1. OBJ was once a member of the PDP. He is not and has never been a member of the APC. Wole Soyinka has never been a member of either the APC or the PDP.

  4. Tonight made me a fulfilled man due to the fact that I love mr fash like my own blood brother, anyone trying to pull him down will be pulled down n will fail, he has always been a man of integrity, since his departure lagos has been asleep, he’s up to the task of defending himself. His track record will always speak for him, lagos has never produced someone like mr fash, if anyone or a godfather is against you we will start a political party that will rule our great nation, they know you have what it takes to be Nigerian President someday, hater should sleep in the pit of the devil forever.

  5. May Almighty God be with you and protect you and your family. You have performed and God knows. Let the enemies of progress go and die. You have responded well. The achievements are there for people to see and comment.

  6. Silence is the best answer for a fool in some circumstances. But you have took time to response to the critics. If they are not satisfy with your explanation, they should go to EFFC with their own evidence. I believe you work well and performed excellently well because of IT

  7. Dear Fashola, I commend you for trying very hard in your commentary called explanations. But keep in mind that this does not in any way give you a clean bill of health. I am really worried about the kind leaders we have in this country. People like the former governor of Rivers state Ameachi et al, after 16 yrs in public office still chases President Buhari around the world with cap in hand begging for appointments. I’ve never seen it all my life. These people would have become “Senior Area Boys” but for democracy in 1999.

  8. Fashola, You need to be disturbed, when one is making progress some people are out to bring you down. You have done well for Lagos state and Nigeria as a whole. You have been a role model for other governors. You have been a change personify. You did well in your tenor and posterity will not forget you.

    1. It is so heartening to see so many good comments about an ex-politician – and in Nigeria. Most inspiring! Wish others would borrow a leaf.

  9. Fashola,God will continue to bless you for setting a very high standard of governance in Lagos state. It is only those who have been in Lagos prior to your emergence as a governor that can really appreciate you.My stay in Lagos is based on what you have done.Other state governors should emulate you.God will propel you to greater height

  10. Oga Fash,

Please leave all these polished English for now! My only question is Can you swear with any JUJU that you did not over invoice, convert govt properties e.g. cars, houses e.t.c. to “yourself”? That you only made do with your monthly salary and security vote?
We can be looking for this evidence that we may never see because it has been cleverly tucked away just the way we are still looking for the evidence against IBB till today.

    1. Agent of corruption ,when you are not sincere, you can not believe that somebody can do any neat work, a cheater like you can not believe anybody, why swear?

    2. He does not need t swear except if you did not read Fashola’s epistle well. $400,000 USD for a website. Only in Nigeria. Shame!

  11. No matter what the detractors are saying ride on you will still hold a post that is more that of a Governor in thus country Nigeria

  12. I have always had faith in fashola, that even if he were to be rode roughshod on in the dust or mud, surely he will rise.

It is only fools that still argues when acts are laid before them.

For the commenters who are puritanical, let him who is saint first cast the stone. No matter how cleanly you wash yourself, the bombom cannot be free of stink,no matter how little. There is always a taint in dainty.

carry go fashola, olori, omo olori. GO ON SOUN JOO.

For me, your good side overshadows the bad side and that is a pass mark

  13. I am an avid admirer of your works and personality and I have digested your response on these allegations. I am particularly concerned about the website fraud. I have come to the conclusion that the contract tendered and awarded by your government for the website construction and maintenance is not only criminal but reprehensible. A check at market related cost for building and maintaining a website shows that spending almost $400,000 on any kind of website with all the new technologies is a fraudulent way of siphoning public funds. I wonder how you would append your signature on such expense without directly benefiting from kick backs. Those who have raised issues on this matter are justified. The new government should rescind the project and reevaluate the cost. I am ashamed you approved this heist.

  14. Mr. Fashola’s defence of the allegations against him simply does not hold water. As SAN (lawyer) one would have expected him to elaborately explain his part of the story and not turning the accusation into politics. How on earth could he use government fund to upgrade his personal website? He should come up with facts and figures to prove his innocence and until then the onus of proof is on him and not on his accusers. The Coalition of Society Network Against Corruption, CSNAC, the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL and the Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Project, SERAP may not after all be wrong since there cannot be fire without smoke. The EFCC should answer the call and probe Mr. Fashola. The probe of Mr. Fashola if carried out will prove the sincerity of Buhari’s administration on corruption.

  15. I am always at a loss when people you have placed in very high pedestal decide to behave childish and thereby making themselves look cheap just because they want people to see them as been people oriented. Barrister Debo Adeshina and his co riders should have vet their information and sieve their facts before embarking in a futile exercise just to rubbish Fashola. He who God has elevated let no man try to bring down. RIDE on BRF.

  16. My ex Governor sir, I had always admired your courage, your astonishing stamina for hard work and strict outrightness for what you believe in. You indeed proved, during your tenure, that true leaders are indeed born and not made. Those throwing mud at you, as you rightly said, are pigs – not that they will win, but just to delight in attempt to make you dirty. Just know this – the good people of Nigeria are waiting patiently to see you at the presidency someday somehow. Remain blessed.

  17. I can see why Buhari is finding it difficult to form his cabinent. There appears to be no saint in the land. $400,000 USD for a website? UNBELIEVABLE! That website should not cost more than $10,000 USD (this even too high) and I know what I am saying. Fashola did well; but he is also tainted. I weep for Nigeria because there are people who are blinded by sentiments, political affiliations, ethnicity, e.t.c. that they can no longer discern wrong from right. This is what will make Buhari’s fight against corruption tough. I am sure Buhari will cringe after reading Fashola’s admission that he spent $400,000 for a website. What is due process in Nigeria when the boss is the one interested in the contract? GOD HELP NIGERIA.

  18. When we speak abt lagos..let the pple who knw lagos well and where born here take d lead.the only thing I admire abt fashola is his carriage..but I have ask over and again for anybody to show me landmark project which is not ppp in lagos..even Ayinke maternity home is not completed aftr 8yrs..agege, bariga, ikeja, ajah, festac, oshodi.etc its either flood or horrible road. Even victoriial island aftr a little rain is flooded. How can brf talk abt 78mil website..can jonathan defend this infront of any of us.may God help nigeria.

  19. BRF did his best as the governor of Lagos. In a system where the performance of leaders is mostly weighed in relative rather than absolute terms, it is hardly surprising why BRF is rated very highly. Only ex-governors Akpabio and Chime could have ranked higher, in the same relative speak.

Good relative performance is by no means a justification for extreme poor judgement such as would seem to be the case in the ‘website gate’. Fundamentally, it is worrisome that there seemed to be no separation between BRF’s personal estate and that of Lagos State on the website development, upgrade and related costs. Why will Lagos State government bear the cost of BRF’s personal website? Why did BRF fathom that? Was that the operational model while he was governor? What else was co-mingled or conflicted? Citing due process is a very weak response and should not stop questions being asked of the nature and cost of the transaction.

It is most likely that the recent accusations against BRF are politically motivated, perhaps geared towards preventing him from having a role in PMB’s government. If it were a voting issue, I would cast my vote for a role for BRF in PMB’s government. I am mindful that some of his views or actions (handling of Lagos Okada and Lekki toll issues, and the ‘deportation’ of Nigerians from Lagos, to be specific) exposed him as not sometimes seeing the big picture. Even those cannot detract from his relative performance in a country that critically needs inspiration from leaders and citizens alike.

Staying on the website issue, it is difficult to see space for a moral high ground for BRF. He is probably right that it is pigs’ fight. Except that when viewed closely, it smacks of a fight between a pig and a hog, which is a domesticated pig typically reared for slaughter.

  20. the evil that men do lives after them the good is oft interred with their bone so let it be with Fashola. Can someone please point to any other governor in all the 36 states and 8 years of service who can boast of half of half of the things Fashola did of course he is bound to make mistakes he is only human afterall and not GOD .i am grossly irritated at people who never see any good in anybody and are always looking for the underbelly of the fish .the man deserves a salute and not a slap on the hand i doff my hat to him .as for his detractors let them tell our new governor to quit complaining about debts and get down to the nitty gritty of governance and not try to dirty his predecessor! Tinubu left debts for Fashola but he didnt go around crying wolf and do remember what goes round comes round e.o.d.

  21. Yakubu Dogara was right that after corruption we should also deal with God Fatherism.
Fashola would not have gotten it all right but he did tried his best.
All this talk talk and no action is coming from somewhere. If a leader assumed duty, i expect he studies his new enviroment but action.
All i know is that the wicked can never go unpunished. We are on a journey and i know we would get to our destination.
