Favour Ashe, Iyanu Bada win 100m titles at MTN Champs in Lagos

Favour Ashe powers to the finish line in the men's 100 meters final at MTN Champs in Lagos

Favour Ashe won the senior men’s 100 meters title at the Lagos Continental Relay.

The 22-year-old clocked 10.28 seconds to win gold in the event’s final, which was held on Thursday at the sport complex of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH).

Ashe was the favourite for the crown, and he did not disappoint despite a performance well below his personal best of 9.96 seconds.

He was in cruise control throughout the race, with little pressure from other athletes. Chidera Ezeakor took silver at 10.38 seconds while ThankGod Igube took bronze.

In the women’s 100 meters, Iyanu Bada won the title with a wind-aided 11.30-second dash.

The 26-year-old had already lowered her personal best twice in the competition — 11.48 seconds in the preliminaries and an even quicker 11.38 seconds in the semi-final. However, a tailwind of +2.6 meters per second nullified Bada’s time in the final as her new personal best.

Florie-Julie Krakre of Ivory Coast finished second while Janet Adesiyan took third.

John Caleb was the champion of the U-20 men’s 100 meters, clocking 10.45 seconds. He defeated Qudus Akintoye and Abdulrahman Jimoh who finished second and third respectively.

In the women’s U-20 100 meters, Lucy Nwankwo clocked a new personal best of 11.99 to win the event, ahead of Mercy Ogbona and Muhammed-Raji Azeezat.
