Kayode Fayemi, governor of Ekiti, has scrapped the payment of education taxes in primary and secondary schools.
Fayemi made this known on Wednesday at a town hall meeting held in Ido-Ekiti.
In 2015, Ayodele Fayose, former governor of the state, had introduced the levy where pupils in private and public schools were mandated to pay N1000 and N500 respectively.
But the new governor said free education is the cardinal policy of his administration, adding that the government cannot owe parents and expect them to pay taxes.

Fayemi also said his administration will introduce free meals for pupils in public schools as from December.
He said: “From today, we have cancelled all educational taxes. We can’t owe parents and expect them to be paying taxes.”
The governor urged members of the party to work towards the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 so that he can extend the rail line to the state.

“That is why I am begging our candidates to reach out and reconcile with those that contested with them for the state and national assembly seats,” he said.
“They should also meet all the leaders because no governor can come from the government house and install all these candidates without the support of the party people.”
