Fayose declares curfew in Ekiti after post-rape violence

Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, has declared a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Ado-Ekiti, capital of the state, following the tension that emanated in the town after a clash erupted between Hausa traders and drivers.

A resident of the town said the crisis started after a wife of a top member of the road transport workers was allegedly raped around the Ijigbo-Old Garage area of the city.

Suspecting that traders in the nearby Erekesan Market, Oja Oba, were complicit in the incident, the transporters engaged them in a fight that led the loss of a life and the destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

Fayose visited the Hausa community at Atikankan area of Ado Ekiti earlier on Thursday and said the curfew would take effect from 6pm on the day.

He ordered the security agencies to arrest whoever was found roaming the streets during the period.

Etop James, the state commissioner of police, who resumed duty a day to the incident, has promised that normalcy would be restored.
