In television appearance on Monday, Bill de Blasio, mayor of New York, said Rahmani “could be armed and dangerous”.

“It is certainly leaning more in the direction that this was a specific act of terror,” Wall Street Journal quoted de Blasio as saying on “Good Morning America.”

He said authorities will be saying more about the connection later in the day.

Meanwhile, has been beefed up ahead of 71st UN General Assembly.

The US Homeland Security Department said the bombing and the discovery of a second device blocks away in Manhattan, along with a blast in nearby New Jersey, prompted officials to tighten security.

Jeh Johnson, Homeland Security secretary, said the department was “actively monitoring and participating in the investigations” of both the New York and New Jersey explosions.

He noted that the UN General Assembly debate, which begins Tuesday, was already designated a national special security event, for which thousands of federal personnel led by the Secret Service were deploying to the city.

“Any area in New York City associated with UNGA will therefore be subject to an extraordinarily high level of surveillance and security,” he said.
