FCE Akoka: Deputy registrar seeks FG’s intervention in provost, unionists’ face-off

Christopher Olamiju, deputy registrar of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos, has called for the federal government’s intervention in the conflict between the provost and workers of the institution.

Last week, Wahab Azeez, the college’s provost, alleged that his life was in danger.

Azeez asked for protection from the government and security agencies over “continued harassment by protesting workers of the college”.

Olamiju said some unionists in the college, under the aegis of “concerned staff,” had asked the provost to leave the office following the completion of his five-year tenure.

He said the unionists did not disrupt academic activities or attempt unlawful eviction of the provost from his official residence.

“The provost has served for five years; by law, his tenure has expired. Meanwhile, his administration has taken this college 10 years backwards,” NAN quoted the deputy registrar as saying.

“The workers’ unions are concerned about this issue, and we are soliciting his removal. We need an acting provost until the authorities appoint a substantive provost.

“It is worthy to note that the same law caught up with the college’s bursar, librarian, and registrar, who observed the law and exited office without any problems. Those currently in that position are in an acting capacity.”

Azeez was appointed the provost of the college in May 2019 for a four-year term of office, but his letter of reappointment for another four-year tenure in office was dated January 23, 2023.

Following his reappointment by the government, Azeez said he resumed for the second term on May 26, 2023.

However, on June 12, 2023, an amended Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023, which recommended a five-year single term for management officers of education colleges nationwide, came into effect.
