The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has directed schools within its jurisdiction to reopen from Sunday, October 11.

While boarding students will resume on Sunday, day students will commence classes on Monday, October 12.

The directive by Mohammed Bello, FCT minister, is coming days after the federal government ordered that all schools in the country be reopened.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, Bello said the guidelines for the reopening of the schools would soon be released to the public.

While noting that the territory did not record any COVID-19 case during the reopening of schools for exit classes, the minister said the academic calendar would cover the third term that was affected by restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the disease.

Schools, churches and other public places were shut after a full lockdown was imposed in the country.

Over the weeks, the federal government has gradually eased the lockdown and provided guidelines to curb the spread of the disease.

So far, the FCT has recorded 5,765 COVID-19 cases.

The territory has recorded the second highest number of cases after Lagos state, according to figures provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
