FG announces landing of 2Africa subsea cable in Akwa Ibom

The federal government has announced the arrival of the 2Africa submarine cable in Qua Iboe, Akwa Ibom.

Bosun Tijani, minister of communications, innovation and digital economy, announced the arrival on his X handle on Wednesday.

The 2Africa is a 45,000-kilometre subsea cable system and the largest cable project in the world.

The cable is said to have the capacity to deepen the continent’s internet connection.

According to Tijani, the submarine, which is the first in the Niger Delta region, is expected to come live in 2025.

“Amazing news yesterday with the landing of the 2Africa Submarine Cable in Qua Iboe, Akwa Ibom,” the minister said.

“This is a significant milestone that has been delivered with the support of President Bola Tinubu, whose directive to all relevant agencies to support the ease of approvals was critical to the successful landing of this cable in Akwa Ibom, a first for the Niger Delta region.

“This cable landing, as well as the one in Lagos last week are important building blocks in our plan to achieve broadband connectivity coverage for the whole country. We expect these cables to go live by early 2025.”

The subsea cables, which landed in Akwa Ibom and Lagos, are the first this year.

On April 21, 2022, Google Africa announced the arrival of its Equiano submarine cable in Lagos – the second in Africa.
