The federal government says 126 stranded Nigerians consisting of children and students have been evacuated from Sudan as the crisis in the country continues.

NAN reports that the returnees arrived in Nigeria via Tarco Aircraft ST-TAL B737-300 at about 5:15 pm on Saturday.

The returnees were received by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the ministry of foreign affairs, national commission for refugees, migrants and internally displaced persons, among others.

Speaking while receiving the returnees, Mustapha Ahmed, director-general of NEMA, said the federal government has made arrangements for more Nigerians to be repatriated from Sudan.

Ahmed, represented by Onimode Bandele, NEMA director of special duties, said the project was among those inherited from the previous administration.

“This evacuation started before the end of the last administration, and being a caring government, President Bola Tinubu’s administration inherited the process and gave us the backing we need to bring them back,” he said.

“The success we are seeing today is because the federal government supported us and the director-general of NEMA has been on top of the situation, getting these flights out of Port Sudan.”
