FG approves modalities for implementing confab report

The federal executive council (FEC) has approved the modalities for the implementation of the recommendations and resolutions contained in the 2014 national conference report.

Anyim Pius, secretary to the government of the federation, made this known while briefing state house correspondents after the weekly federal executive council meeting chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Anyim said the council gave the approval following advice from a presidential committee on the report of the national conference, chaired by Mohammed Adoke, the attorney-general and minister of justice.

“You will recall that barely one year ago, Mr. President inaugurated the conference and at the end of their seating, the conference came up with a report and submitted the report to Mr. President,” he said.

“You will also recall that the conference came up with modalities for implementing their resolutions and recommendations. And I think it is the high point of that effort.

“They did not only come up with recommendations, they not only agreed on basic measure, they also recommended to government how to implement those recommendations and resolutions.

“Let me say that what happened in council today was for the council to approve that those modalities be adopted in implementing the report.”

He said the attorney-general had been directed to compile the resolutions and recommendations that had implications on constitutional amendment or enactment of new laws for onward transmission to the national assembly for legislation.

Anyim said the council also directed that those recommendations that had to do with policy matters and which required action by federal agencies should be referred to the agencies for immediate implementation

He said the resolutions contained in the report that required action by state and local governments or state agencies should be referred to the states and local governments for immediate implementation.

“On other matters that require legal issues, for instance where it concerns constitutional amendment, it is not really the responsibility of the national assembly alone,” he said.

“They have to work with the state assemblies to bring effect to this. So, today, we are taking steps towards implementing the resolutions of the national conference and we believe the vision of Mr. President in setting up the conference.

“We believe in the wonderful work done by eminent Nigerians, who attended the conference, in producing the report and we believe our country will benefit immensely from the work of this conference.”
