The federal ministry of youth and sports development has commenced rehabilitation of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, Oyo state.

It is understood that the facility has suffered years of neglect, prompting ongoing rehabilitation.

The project is being carried out under the adopt-a-pitch initiative of Sunday Dare, the minister of sports and youth development.

In a statement, the ministry said the move was in line with its drive to upgrade sports infrastructure across the country.

“Infrastructure is key in sports growth and development and the welfare of athletes has also remained top priority, thus we introduced the Adopt-an-Athlete and Adopt-a-Pitch initiatives,” Dare said.

The Awolowo Stadium makes it the fourth in the country to get a face-lift after the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Daura Township Stadium, Katsina and the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos state.

The Abuja Stadium has since hosted all cadres of the national football teams as well as national and international club football games.

The Daura Stadium is also serving the people of Katsina state and beyond while the Surulere Stadium is having its tracks laid after the pitch was revived and a new electronic scoreboard installed.
