FG launches ‘SDGs Implementation Plan 2020-2030’

The federal government, on Monday, launched the ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Implementation Plan 2020-2030’ — with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The implementation plan is a technical publication that details action points for governments at all levels, as well as stakeholders, to actualise the vision of the SDGs.

The SDGs cover policies and other implementation efforts to improve the welfare of citizens.

During the launch in Abuja, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, senior special assistant to the president on SDGs, said the federal government will support state governments to prioritise the goals in their development policies and plans.

“The technical publication provides a comprehensive roadmap for national and sub-national governments, as well as diverse stakeholders on the implementation of the sustainable development goals,” she said.

“This will involve strengthening the capacities of state officials to conceptualise, integrate and implement the SDGs at the sub-national level, with the aim of ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind.”

Also speaking, Mohamed Yahya, UNDP Nigeria resident representative, said the achievement of the goals lies in the state governments taking action to begin to actualise the vision of the future.

“The achievement of the SDGs is highly dependent on the ability of sub-national governments to take ownership and embody their vision of the future in concrete actions and initiatives,” he said.

“It is in this context that the UNDP, alongside the OSSAP-SDGs, is assisting sub-national governments in Nigeria by supporting both state and national governments to align their development strategies and programmes with the SDGs.”
