Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation, says Nigerians must return to old values and remember symbols that fostered unity.

Idris spoke when he visited the headquarters of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) on Tuesday in Abuja.

The NOA is an agency supervised by his ministry.

The minister said there must be a conversation around value orientation because the country’s national life is determined by the character of its citizens.

“Anytime any government official was visiting, one of the things we used to welcome them at that time was this national flag. People kept waving it,” he said.

“The only time you see us waving this national flag now is if there is a match between Nigeria and another country.

“I think we should return to those old values.

“It is important for Nigerians to go back to the old ways, remember those symbols that helped us keep our country together and remind us of the direction that this country should be moving towards.

“For preserving these powerful national symbols, we thank you. There is going to be national conversation around this value orientation or reorientation and I think that is the starting point.

“Almost every aspect of our national life is being determined by our character.”

The minister also visited the office of the Nigeria Press Council (NPC) where he reiterated that the administration of President Bola Tinubu would not gag the media.
