FG petitions Ukraine over death of Nigerian medical doctor

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairman of Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), says the agency has petitioned the Ukraine government over the death of Bolade Ejemai, a Nigerian medical doctor.

She confirmed this in a statement Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the commission’s head of media, issued on her behalf on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old medical doctor was allegedly murdered by one Victoria Popvrako, a 36-year-old Ukrainian and mother of two.

The NIDCOM chairman was quoted as saying a petition has been made to the Ukrainian ministry of foreign affairs and the police department in Kharkiv to demand full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the doctor.

“It was reported that our Embassy in Ukraine have engaged with both the host Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Police department in Kharkiv, informing them of the concern of the Federal government over the death of Dr Ibukun,” she said.

“We have therefore requested for a full and thorough investigation into the circumstance surrounding his demise, with a view to ensuring that justice is carried out.”

Dabiri-Erewa said the Nigerian embassy in Ukraine has called a meeting with the affected stakeholders in the country in order to discussions the issue.

Segun Ashade, a friend of the deceased, had told TheCable, in a phone chat, that the incident was master-minded and executed by the lady and her father.

Ashade recounted that the deceased narrated his ordeal on hospital bed, three days after he came out from coma.

It was reported that after two unsuccessful surgeries, he eventually passed five days later (August 14) from complications of the injuries sustained from the incident.

Ejemai, a final year medical student of Kharkov International Medical University until his death, had lived in Ukraine for 10 years during which he had an affair with Popvrako.
