FG relaunches programme to commercialise, reduce gas flare

The federal government says it has relaunched the Nigerian gas flare commercialisation programme (NGFCP).

Gbenga Komolafe, chief executive officer (CEO), NUPRC, made this known at an event marking the relaunch.

Komolafe said the move was on the heels of a submission by the NUPRC programme management team, set up by the federal government to coordinate the implementation of the NGFCP.

According to him, the formal rework of the programme was to readjust it with the objectives of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

He added that the NGFCP was also modified to reflect current flare disposition.

“A comprehensive audit of the flare gas portfolio and facilities’ disposition across the industry, as well as an in-depth assessment of the prevailing operational realities in producing areas and changes in the wider macro-economic environment, has been carried out by the commission; towards charting the optimum path forward for the programme,” he said.

Komolafe also asked bidders to visit the NUPRC website.

He added that existing applicants who previously submitted bids under the previous launch would be deemed pre-qualified once they meet the basic requirements for status validation as stated in the request for qualification (RFQ).

A request for qualification is a document that asks potential suppliers to detail their background and experience in providing a specific good or service.

“The auction process has been streamlined to enable an accelerated delivery schedule for this exercise with the announcement of winners planned for December 2022,” he said.

The federal government had declared 2021 to 2030 as the ‘decade of gas’, for optimal gas development and utilisation.

While the World Bank had set 2030 as the target year to end gas flaring, the federal government said Nigeria is committed to ending gas flaring by 2025.
