FG rescues 58 trafficked Nigerian women, children in Ghana

Fifty-eight Nigerian women and children have been rescued from human traffickers in Ghana.

Abdur-Rahman Balogun, spokesperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), said Callistus Elozieuwa, chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana, relayed the development.

He said Balogun spoke with Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairman of NiDCOM, when she checked-in on the trafficked victims at their location in Accra.

The spokesperson of NIDCOM gave the breakdown of those rescued as Kano (47), Katsina (5), Jigawa (2) and Kaduna (4).

The statement added that some of the suspected agents have been apprehended and handed over to security agencies for profiling and prosecution.

Dabiri-Erewa commended NIDO Ghana, and Ghanaian law enforcement agencies, for their cooperation.

The rescued women and children are on their way back to Nigeria where they will be profiled and counselled by the National Agency for the Prohibition Of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP), reunited with their families and rehabilitated by their various state governments.

Eleven more girls who were earlier rescued have also been repatriated to Nigeria.

A total of 105 have so far been rescued in the last few months.
