Ekperikpe Ekpo, minister of state for petroleum resources (gas), says Nigeria is ready to partner with West African countries to improve the adoption of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) across the region.

Ekpo spoke on Monday at the 6th West Africa LGP expo, themed “LPG as clean fuel for energy transition in West Africa”.

Speaking at the event, Ekpo, who was represented by Abel Igheghe, technical adviser on downstream to the minister, stressed the need for a unified regional approach to LPG adoption, stressing that energy transition is not a journey any country can undertake alone.

“It requires regional collaboration, knowledge sharing and strategic partnership. West African nations must align their policies to create a harmonised LPG market that ensures affordability and accessibility across borders,” Ekpo said.

“Nigeria stands ready to work with regional partners, development agencies and private sector players to scale up LPG adoption in West Africa.

“By leveraging our gas resources and expertise, we can foster a future where LPG is at the forefront of energy security and climate action in our region.”

Ekpo highlighted Nigeria’s progress in LPG infrastructure development, citing key initiatives such as the LPG penetration programme and increased private-sector investments.

The minister acknowledged the need for sustained investment in LPG infrastructure across the region.

“Governments and private entities must work collaboratively to establish efficient supply chains, improve safety standards, and create an enabling environment that attracts investment in the LPG sector,” he said.

“To accelerate LPG adoption, we are implementing targeted policy interventions, including removing bottlenecks that hinder investment in the sector.”

The minister outlined several government measures designed to support LPG adoption, including tax waivers on LPG imports and equipment, as well as streamlined importation processes for cylinders and accessories.

Ekpo added that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) is developing a pricing framework in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to ensure price stability and potential reductions in LPG costs.

He also noted that the presidential compressed natural gas (PCNGi) initiative is working in synergy with the LPG sector to expand clean energy alternatives.

“By supporting both LPG and CNG adoption, we are strengthening our energy security while reducing dependence on expensive and polluting fuels,” the minister added.

Ekpo reiterated the government’s commitment to leading the charge in sustainable energy transition, stressing that collective efforts can drive a cleaner, greener, and prosperous future for West Africa.
