World Cup Special: The day Zubizaretta ‘scored’ for Nigeria in France ’98

The Super Eagles were the underdogs when they faced a formidable Spanish team at the 1998 World Cup in France.

The Nigerian team coached by Velibor Bora Milutinovic did not adequately prepare for the tournament, yet a lot was expected from the players.

After a good outing at the 1994 World Cup, many Nigerians hoped for an improved performance in France. However, the Eagles failed to advance past the second stage of the championship.

A 3-2 win against favourites Spain in the first game was the high point of the World Cup for Nigeria. The result reminded the football world of how dangerous Nigeria can be.

The main talking point of the game was the Super Eagles’ second goal; a cross which experienced Spanish goalkeeper Andoni Zubizaretta misjudged and pushed inside his net.
