Filipe Nyusi wins Mozambique’s presidential election

Filipe Nyusi, the candidate of Frelimo Party, has been announced winner of the presidential election in Mozambique.

He polled 57 percent of votes cast ahead of Afonso Dhlakama, candidate of Renamo Party, who had 36 per cent.

Frelimo also maintained its majority in the 250-seat parliament, but lost 49 seats compared to 2009.

Frelimo has dominated politics since independence from Portugal in 1975.

However, Renamo, which fought a long civil war with Frelimo, has rejected the results of the election, alleging that it was riddled with widespread irregularities.

An election official in the central city of Beira was arrested after trying to fiddle a list of results in favour of Frelimo.

Beira is a stronghold of the Mozambique Democratic Movement’s Daviz Simango, who polled 6.5 per cent of the presidential votes.
